Except for two sections, floating the Kootenay River is not difficult, and offers a pleasant float. The scenery is nice and the current is fast, especially during high water. Prime floating conditions occur with river flows between 8000-12,000cfs.

Source of the Columbia Trail
The source of the fourth largest river system in North America starts here within the Village of Canal Flats. Bubbling out of the ground from deep springs, and filling Columbia Lake with its awe inspiring jade blue green colour, the mighty Columbia River is turned loose, flowing north, then turning south and west and finally emptying into the Pacific Ocean, over a 2500 km journey.

Columbia Lake is the primary lake at the headwaters of the Columbia River, in British Columbia, Canada. It is fed by several small tributaries. The village of Canal Flats is located at the south end of the lake.

Fish at Premier or White Swan Lake
White Swan usually is ice-free in early May. Good on chironomids and leeches. This lake can fish well into July also as it is cooler.
Premier is good from ice out(usually mid April) to May long weekend. Good fish on chironomids, scuds, and leeches.

Starting right from Invermere, the road running through Zehnder’s runs parallel to the Canyon Trail, the old Toby Creek bridge and the backdoor route to Panorama. Twenty kilometres (12mi) south of Invermere on Highway 93/95, just north of Fairmont, you’ll find the trailhead of the Spirit Trail, a doubletrack journey that follows the eastern side of Columbia Lake all the way to Canal Flats.
